According to IEEE Spectrum magazine, 5G networks include spectrum bands with higher frequencies than 4G, which means that 5G base stations serve smaller individual coverage areas. In other words, more base stations are needed compared to the number needed for 4G. Due to the lack of installation sites (especially in urban areas) and the high cost of deploying 5G networks, operators in Japan are sharing mobile infrastructure.
